3/4 cup Golden Crisco or Butter-flavored Crisco (shortening)
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
Coloured decorations or icing
Cream Crisco, sugar, eggs and vanilla in large mixer bowl at medium speed of electric mixer until light and creamy. Cmbine flour, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture, mixing on low speed until well blended. Cover dough and chill 1 hour, if desired, for easy rolling. Preheat oven to 375°F. Roll half of dough at a time. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a cookie cutter, cut in desired shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Roll leftover pieces. Sprinkle with coloured decorations or leave plain to decorate when cool. Bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are light brown. (Time will vary with cookie size.) Cool slightly, then remove to cooling rack.

I use this recipe EVERY year for the last 4-5 years!! I have people asking me for the recipe all the time. I would think of using nothing else! I make snowflakes and stars and dip them in white chocolate and then drizzle dark chocolate on them to give them a gourmet look.

I just realized that I didn't read the recipe carefully enough and used regular crisco rather than the butter-flavored kind. Regular crisco made for really bland cookies. Make sure you use butter-flavored or maybe try it with butter.

I made these with white unbleached whole wheat flour, and they were bland. Maybe it was the type of flour I used? I added more sugar to the second batch, but they still didn't have much taste. They were also rather dry. Perhaps, as someone else suggested, they would have more taste with real butter. I cooked them at 350 rather than 375 and found that 7 minutes was sufficient.

I made this with my family but with the way it is you can NOT roll it out we had to alter it with an extra cup of flour. Then it wasn't sugary enough so I'm guessing if i add an extra 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup flour it would be good.

I add almond or lemon extract instead of vanilla and it gives the cookies a great taste.

Absolutely awesome!! I can see why some people thought the dough was too sticky to roll because at first I thought it was as well, however, I decided to just put some flour over the dough and on the rolling pin and it rolled just fine. It felt a lot lighter then any dough I've rolled before but it was awesome!! Worked very well with my cookie cutters! The taste as well was awesome. Mine cooked perfectly for 7 minutes. I will diffidently use this recipe again!!

just a heads up, if your shortening is rancid or old it can give an off flavor. Also, as much of the argument over trans fats, Crisco no longer has the trans fat in it which also alters the flavor. I would just use plain old butter in this recipe.

I have been a cook for 30 years and I tried this cookie last year. It is by far the best sugar cookie, Christmas cookie any cookie I have ever baked. It was so good that when I lost my receipe from last year and I googled "Sugar Cookies using Butter-flavored Crisco" to get this receipe. Yes butter-flavored Crisco instead of butter makes the perfect cookie!
