Mexican Flag Cookies

2 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
2 cups butter (4 sticks), softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
4 1/2 cups sifted flour
Red and green colored sugar

Preheat oven to 350F. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Cream together butter and sugar. Beat until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Blend in dissolved yeast. Gradually stir in flour. Chill dough for about 2 hours. Shape into 3/4" balls. Dip one side in red sugar, the other in green sugar, leaving a clear stripe down the center. Place on buttered cookie sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from immediately to wire racks to cool.

This is not your traditional American cookie recipe, but that's why I like it. My daugter is Mexican and she helps me make these every year for her Adoption Day. We share them with her class and they all love them. And of course, the red & green colors make them great for Christmas. four stars

When I made these cookies they were very bland and even bad tasting. In my opinion the festive sugar even looks cheap and rediculous. I would never make these again. one star

These cookies are very festive and colorful looking, but I did not like the taste very much. You can taste the yeast in the cookies. To me they were ho-hum. two stars
